The Design Engineer is responsible for all design activities involving steam turbine product lines. The successful candidate will be involved in all design aspects of steam turbine engineering and package design focusing on:

  • Thermodynamic steam path design.
  • Package engineering design, selection and specification of auxiliary systems and components.
  • CAD modelling of steam turbine components within our CAD system (Solidworks) if required.
  • Supporting Sales and Product Applications to size & select steam turbines during bidding phase.
  • Support Aftermarket side of the business to offer performance & efficiency advances to our installed base and competitors equipment.
  • Support our Technical Support team on a range of mechanical queries.

Applications from suitably qualified ex-military personnel (Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Marines) will be particularly relevant for this position but other qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Work within the existing design team undertaking detailed design work and potentially some draughting of various components across various product ranges.
  • Help in the development of steam turbines designs and issue for manufacture and procurement in line with project schedule requirements.
  • Deliver commitments on time, budget, quality and to specification.
  • Design of product components and assemblies from initial concept through to modelling and detailing.
  • Conduct VAVE efforts on identified components to improve competitiveness of product portfolio.
  • Identify potential product improvements and the benefits of implementing such improvements.
  • Liaise with manufacturing to find solutions to component issues that arise.
  • Create best practices for both processes and components handled by the team.
  • Development of existing products to enhance the portfolio of the business.
  • Provide technical support to other areas of the business, namely sales, applications, manufacturing, supply chain, quality and aftermarket.
  • Perform thermodynamic and mechanical design analysis to size and verify functionality of Steam Turbines for contracts or proposals, using both industry standard and in-house bespoke engineering software.
  • Ensure that new and existing designs comply with quality, safety, reliability, maintainability and cost targets.
  • Issue design engineering data and then create engineering drawings for manufacture and procurement.
  • Review and approve drawings, layouts, specifications and sub supplier data.
  • Review and improve mechanical and thermodynamic design and control technology of steam turbine product range.
  • Liaise with Electrical Control & Instrumentation Engineers to ensure best control design practice.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety practices are followed both in daily work and incorporated with product design.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a design and engineering environment.
  • Similar experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of CAD systems particularly Solidworks.
  • Use of and construction of intelligent parametric modelling.
  • DFMA experience.
  • Experience of dealing with complex customer specifications.
  • Experience in the Oil and Gas or Power Generation industries.
  • Experience of Steam Turbines, Reciprocating Gas Compressors and/or CHP systems.
  • Understanding of P&ID drawings and experience of constructing them.
  • Six Sigma/Lean experience is desirable.
