Fitter - PE1 - PE38

Working with a small team, building reciprocating gas compressors or steam turbines.  

Manage all internal tests, ensuring any problems are identified and corrected prior to the customer test, which is also led by the Fitter.  Once the test process is complete, the Fitter co-ordinates key tasks for

despatching the compressor/steam turbine to the customer.

Building reciprocating Steam Turbines, Gas Receipting Compressors and Gearbox assemblies

This will incorporate virtually every mechanical assembly aspect including: a wide range of fitting skills, assembling of components and testing.

Applications from suitably qualified ex-military personnel (Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Marines) will be particularly relevant for this position but other qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

Delivering customer solutions

• Work may be allocated by the Cell Manager or Team Leader and working in a team of three or four to build the compressor, with different team members working on the compressor at different times or all at once as required.
• It may also be necessary to work on a number of contracts simultaneously, completing work as required.

Building the Compressor/Steam Turbine

• Working from drawings and to a time schedule in line with documentation, participate in the building of the compressor/steam turbine, including fitting and assembling various compressor/steam turbine components to the base plate or build up from temporary blocks
• Liaise with Designers as required
• Management and movement of components as required, for example push and pull things through the business through the Expeditor or personally from Stores if required.
• Completion of job cards on a daily basis ensure all hours are booked accordingly
• Make sure that all route cards and drawings are returned to the job once your operation has been completed so it can then be moved on to its next operation.
• All job card allocated hours must be completed in the given time, if this is not the case then your team leader or line manger must be made aware so that the reasons can be understood.

• Be proactive in managing what can be achieved with the tools, materials and equipment available
• Interact with other tradesman when required to ensure that every team member can focus on completing their tasks and at the right time

Testing

• Make appropriate arrangements for movement of the compressor/steam turbine the test process to be managed in an allocated test bay or on the test bed
• Carry out hydrotesting – pressure testing for leaks in pipework/cylinders
• Co-ordinate and work with the Inspectors and Quality team to ensure that all pre customer testing processes are complete and ensuring that the compressor/steam turbine is capable of what achieving what the customer wants
• Identify problems and work with other ‘experts’ in order to manage any problems that need solving prior to the customer visit
• Manage the customer throughout the test procedure ensuring smooth running of process and that the customer is happy

• Ensure full understanding and implementation of personal obligations relation to the Health & Safety at Work Act and the Company’s Health & Safety Policy.

Knowledge

• Reading and understanding engineering drawings

• Able to work to close tolerances
• Able to use air tools, Air drill , grinders,
• Scraping “bores and flat surfaces for the purpose of bedding parts
• Alignment of components
• Able to use a crane
• Pressure testing
• Able to test completed machine builds to ensure all systems work, and demonstrate the machine to the customer.

Qualifications

• City and guilds ONC/HNC Time served fitter
• GCSE English & Maths

Experience

• Time severed in a heavy fitting environment preferred however consideration will be given to anyone that can demonstrate they have considerable fitting experience

• Working at height
