Lead Applications Engineer - PE1 - PE38

As a ‘Lead’ Engineer responsibility for reviewing and distributing work within the Applications Team will be key responsibility. Working as a member of the Engineering Department you will lead the team to primarily provide support to sales and proposal related work, or other work as required by the Engineering Manager.

The position will require interaction with other business areas including design, quality, project management, supply chain and aftermarket.

Applications from suitably qualified ex-military personnel (Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Marines) will be particularly relevant for this position but other qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

Key Tasks & Accountabilities

Core Tasks

    • Work closely with the Sales team to identify suitable enquiries using the gate process, in line with the specific QPS.
    • Review, coordinate, prioritise and distribute work within the Applications Team.
    • Ensure the relevant QPS is being adhered to and make amendments for improvements as required.
    • Support Engineering Manager in recruitment requirements and appraisals.
    • Support, mentor and assist any junior department members.
    • Work with Sales to understand key market drivers for our products.
    • Understand internal costing structures and challenge the business to drive down cost.
    • Help to define market price for our products within key regions.
    • Identify and develop partners/packagers/sub-vendors for our equipment.
    • Liaise as necessary with the other departments within the organisation to improve and maintain effective communications.
    • Review customer enquiries, recognising and identifying key technical and commercial criteria.
    • Selection of equipment with associated auxiliary systems.
    • Determine and have responsibility for all costs (material and labour) in the standard format and agree price to customer with sales.
    • Issue enquiries to sub-vendors for ancillary equipment.
    • Evaluate sub-vendor quotations both technically and commercially and select vendors for inclusion in tender.
    • Prepare budget and detailed technical and commercial tenders.
    • Gather, prepare and arrange bid supporting information in a format suitable for client submission.
    • Work to client driven deadlines.
    • Support sales and technical staff in bid clarification meetings at customer locations worldwide.
    • Use and update CRM system.
    • Work with sales tools, methods and strategies.
    • Oversee the creation of technically compliant drawings to submit with the bid.

Additional Tasks (in conjunction with other functions within the company)

  • Determining the delivery time possible to suit each customers requirement and provide production schedule to demonstrate.
  • Assist the sales department in determining contract conditions, financial requirements, cash flows and carry out commercial and financial checks.
  • Attend international exhibitions to converse with customers and suppliers.
  • Review and understand client specifications, including chairing specification review meetings.
  • Work with SCM to find and evaluate potential new sub vendors.
  • Complete sub vendor bid tabulations.
  • Carry out dual-use checks for export compliance.

Future Tasks (through personal development and training within the company)

    • Carry out performance calculations using dedicated software.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

    • Must have relevant engineering experience.
    • Knowledge of steam turbines or gas compressors and associated systems advantageous.
    • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
    • Communication skills, both written and verbal.

Qualification

    • Degree/HND in a related engineering discipline (mechanical preferred).

Travel

  • Domestic and international travel is required to support project presentations, bid clarification and project kick-off meetings.
