Production Engineer - PE1 - PE38

Main purpose

The main duties of the Production Engineering department are to act as the link between design and production, the production engineer will be responsible for creating and updating BOM’s and Routings along with creating CNC Programs for our bespoke product. It is expected that aside from their normal duties the candidate will also assist in productivity improvement and business development activities. The successful candidate will be expected to display a willing attitude along with a drive to help support the companies development.

Applications from suitably qualified ex-military personnel (Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Marines) will be particularly relevant for this position but other qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

  • HND or degree qualified in a relevant Engineering discipline
  • Served a 4 year minimum mechanical engineering apprenticeship.

Experience

  • At least 5 years in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Experienced in programming a wide variety of machine tool control systems including, Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain and Mazak. Used to working in a high quality high traceability environment

Key Tasks & Accountabilities Strategic – Business Unit

  • Contribute ideas to business development activities where appropriate.
  • Develop best practice principles to create a ‘company culture’ of continuous process improvement.
  • Contribute ideas to the development of initiatives that will improve the way we do things.

Apprentice Programme/Trainees

  • Provide departmental support to the development of Apprentices and Company Trainees.
  • Provide feedback on learning activities.

Team

  • Work as part of the Production Engineering and Manufacturing teams.
  • Give feedback and offer ideas and suggestions for improving team performance.

Customer Relationship – Internal

  • Be actively involved in internal customer relationships in the Manufacturing area and across the business.
  • Act as the baton (go between) between design and manufacture
  • Ensure that internal delivery standards are met to ensure efficiency and effectiveness over the total product manufacturing process.
  • Support peers across the business in providing specialist knowledge and expertise from time to time.

Customer Relationship Management – External

  • Be an ambassador for the business when customers and visitors come on site
  • Play a role as required in customer witness management.

Supplier Development & Management

  • Advise designers and sub contract estimators on the practicality, viability and ease of manufacture of components.

Communication

  • Produce reports and written correspondence as required for this role.
  • Play their part in the provision of feedback and delivery of ideas to develop and improve solutions for the product portfolio. Ensure feedback loop to line manager outlining general activities of role and ‘how we are doing’.
  • When selected and in the absence of the department manager, attend and contribute to, key company meetings that may include production of services and process, for example, production and spares meetings.

Process management

  • Ensure Production Engineering processes are maintained efficiently and effectively, offering ideas for driving continuous improvement.
  • Planning the manufacturing operations required to produce components and assemblies to achieve conformance to drawing and contract quality plan requirements at a minimum cost to the Company.
  • Programming of a wide diversity of machine tools including: lathes, vertical machining centres, large gantry mill, vertical and horizontal borers.
  • Work with managers, team leaders and operators to resolve production and programming problems at the machine tool.
  • Define material form and size requirements.
  • Co-ordinate engineering change control.
  • Maintain programme libraries and routings at latest drawing revision.
  • Produce layouts and CNC programmes with due regard to estimate, batch size, repeatability, programming and fixture costs.
  • Contribute to the management of projects in designing and developing new processes or changing existing ones.
  • Recommend stocking policy for materials and component batch sizing.
  • Ensure that the appropriate processes are adhered to for continual accreditation of IS09001

Systems management

  • Ensure timely updating of the Company system as appropriate.
  • Ensure timely updating of returned CNC programmes accepting only relevant changes.
  • Maintain routings and programme versions at the latest drawing revision as advised by engineering change note.
  • Ensure maximum accuracy of tooling records on the ISIS tool management system

Machinery & Tooling

  • Work with and assist maintenance personnel to diagnose machine tool / control faults.
  • Ensure accurate and urgent reporting of issues including breakdowns, related to machinery and tooling.
  • Ensure machines are running in accordance with health, safety and environment rules and standards.
  • Make recommendations for tool improvement and tool investment.
  • Develop new tooling and methods to reduce production costs to a minimum.
  • Ensure tool life optimisation

Health & Safety

  • Ensure complete understanding and adherence to personal responsibilities in relation to the health and safety policy are met.
  • Ensure health and safety standards are met in relation to: people, processes, plant and machinery and facilities

Quality Management

  • Ensure high standards of delivery of Cell production, right first time.
  • Understand Production Engineering and Manufacturing role in relation to the requirements of the ISO9001:2000 accreditation.
  • Ensure that rework is the exception and not the norm

Financial

  • Contribute to development of the Company investment programme for plant and machinery.
  • Suggest ideas to reduce cost and improve productivity.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Machine Start Date (MSD) from Bill of Materials (BOM) – aim to produce routings at least two weeks before MSD.
  • Departmental scrap rectification.
  • Best practice improvements.
  • Times taken vs planned.
