Main purpose

The Quality Engineer (QE) role is responsible for ensuring that customers’ quality expectations are met.  The QE will lead, execute and coordinate all quality assurance activities on allocated contracts to ensure that customer and company quality requirements are met.

The QE will support the development of the Quality Management System (QMS) so it meets the companys business needs.  This is achieved through a combination of continuous improvement projects, auditing, problem investigation and engagement with employees to implement more effective working practices.

Applications from suitably qualified ex-military personnel (Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Marines) will be particularly relevant for this position but other qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

Major Accountabilities and Key Responsibilities

Operational:

  • Responsible for ensuring all contractual quality activities occur to support timely delivery of customer requirements.  This includes accurately and timely quality milestone points being achieved, investigating & resolving quality engineering issues, ensuring components are correct & have the required test certification, and delivery of the electronic quality documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with all levels of the organisation to satisfy their quality requirements by providing appropriate technical support to the required business areas.  Ensure prompt action is taken to allow the company to meet its contractual obligations.
  • Ensure that appropriate procedures for the reporting and investigation of quality issues are implemented and effectively utilised in order to promote organisational learning and prevent recurrence.

Management System:

  • Ensure our management system is adhered to, ensuring continuous certification to relevant international standards for the company (e.g. ISO 9001/ISO 14001/ISO 45001).
  • Engage internal and external (customer and third party body) audits and inspections which includes:
  1. facilitating contractual witness/hold points to ensure approval and minimise any potential contract delays.
  2. Working with other departments to ensure that company quality systems meet customer contractual requirements.

Training:

    • Responsible for ensuring that expert guidance, professional advice, support and assistance is provided on quality matters.

Communication:

    • Use appropriate channels of communication to promote employee engagement and direct involvement in quality matters in order to establish a culture of continuous improvement across the organisation.
    • Drive the process of sharing and learning through the company to ensure methods which prevent future recurrence and establish best practice methods are identified and embedded.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • HNC/HND/City & Guilds Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Auditor trained (ISO 9001)
  • Mechanical Workshop experience

Desirable:

  • Time served engineering apprenticeship or related working experience
  • Lead Auditor trained (ISO 9001)
  • CMM inspection experience
  • NDT reporting experience
  • Coating reporting experience

Technical Knowledge

Essential:

  • Strong engineering background in a relevant industry with understanding of similar manufacturing processes
  • Good understanding of relevant material & mechanical engineering quality standards, codes & practices
  • Improvement of business management systems (eg quality, HSE)
  • Rigorous and methodological approach to root cause analysis and problem solving practices
  • Ability to understand and analyse statistics
  • Capability to plan, monitor and execute tasks through to completion

Desirable:

  • Understanding of welding engineering and welder qualifications
  • Understanding of non-destructive testing methods
